Pulau Jerajak is located 1.5 nautical miles from the Penang Island off the west coast of Malaysia. You must take a short ferry ride from Bayan Lepas, Penang and the ferry ticket is available at the ticket counter of Pulau Jerejak's jetty.
Pulau Jerejak was known as The Alcatraz of Malaysia due to the Jerejak Prison. Francis Light, the founders of Penang arrived at Pulau Jerejak in early 1786 before heading to Penang and brought immigrants from other parts of Asia. As a precautionary step, these immigrants were send to Jerejak for health inspection purpose before they were accepted in Penang.
After World War II, once a hospital for tuberculosis and leprosy patients and then a prison housing some of Malaysia's most wanted criminals, Pulau Jerejak has certainly seen its share of hardship and pain, but now the sounds of the past have died away and the island has taken on a fresh look, reverting back to its original splendour and currently is under developed as a place of tourism.
