Snailovation!

Hello buddies. What will first come to your mind when you think about snail? And my impression towards snail: It is a small animal that lives in a shell that it carries on its back and moves very slowly. I was so lucky that I have the chance to experience the "Snailovation at Art & About Festival 2013" during the Australia trip. 24 giant, colourful and funky snails were installed in the most iconic location of Sydney, Australia.Created by International artistic collective Cracking ART Group, the critters, remarkably, aren’t on public display for the first time. The group's critter creations have participated in the Venice Biennale in 2001 (turtle) and 2011 (snails), as well as being part of a collaboration with Marc Jacobs in Paris in 2009 (rabbits).

You may ask: What make the group to come out with the idea by using snails as the symbol of environmental awareness? Why not tiger, bear or other powerful and strong animals? The reason is due to the representative nature of snails that invite people to adopt a rhythm that allows them to observe and listen more carefully in a world that is always in a hurry.

The snails  are made entirely from recyclable, non-toxic materials, becoming an inspiring reminder of the importance of environmental awareness and action. And usually the artwork will be recycled back into the environment after the installation are finished. They are broken down into pieces, chopped-up and reprocessed into plastic powder which will then be used to create others works. Their next project will involve producing items of furniture with the material that comes from the recycled sculptures.

Happy weekend!

Love,
Beverly
