Fort Cornwallis is an old star-shaped and the
largest standing fort in Penang, Malaysia. It’s one of the most popular
historical landmarks in George Town.
Captain Sir Francis Light took possession of the island from the Sultan
(King) of Kedah in 1786 and built the original fort. The fort was intended as a
deference against the pirates, Kedah and
the French because of the Napoleonix Wars.
In the end, Fort Cornwallis served more as an administrative center and
storage base for the for British as no battle even happened.
